I have a few new students who want or need to play with the Traditional Grip. Two of them will need to do this in order to be able to play with the drum line in school. So, I’ve gone back to really shedding this. My first drum teacher taught me this gip, and I’m really having fun.

BUT… I’m not a big fan of the term, “grip.” To me, it implies a certain tightness that I don’t want in my playing. I know that this term has been around for a long time; however, I tend to talk more about “hand position” as opposed to “grip.” It seems to get me (and my students) closer to the thing sooner rather than later.

Either way, I’m enjoying practicing and playing in this fashion. What’s old is new again.
