When I’m working on new material on the drums, I want to develop a level of fluency with it before test driving it at a gig. I want it to be fluid and not sounding as if I’m struggling. That being said, I’m not always successful in this. There are times that I feel that I have it together, try it out in a musical way, and it doesn’t fit or sound as good as it did in the practice room. That’s ok — as long as I don’t completely lose track of where I am, the pulse, etc. I want to practice it some more, so that the next time it simply comes out. I try to spare my fellow musicians my agony that I felt when I was learning it!
