More is Less is a saying that many of us have heard, and it’s been talked about quite a bit through the years. I have to say, I really like the idea of playing less. I love the feeling of establishing a strong groove and trying to keep it there without messing with it. There’s a certain energy and almost trance-like state that can emerge from this.
Some of my favorite recordings are when the drummer simply grooves. Please don’t be fooled — it’s not simple and it’s taken me quite a while to get to this point in my drumming. It’s great to figure out a new lick and/or drum fill, and I still do that. However, I find that I really enjoy hearing and playing the groove.
