I always get a thrill when one or more of my bandmates gives me “that look” while I’m playing. This usually happens when the rhythm section has locked into a nice swingin’ groove and it just feels good! I tend to like the approach of letting it alone at that point. If I mess with it, I may lose it! Now, that being said, I also like staying in the moment and interacting with the soloist. It can be a fine line to do both, but that’s the goal — keep that groove and be spontaneous, as well.

By the way, any groove can swing— not just a swing tune. Listen to the James Brown drummers and I think you’ll hear what I’m talking about! They were the masters of holding a groove even when it came time for them to “solo.” I love that and it continues to inspire me every day!
