I am sometimes amazed at how good something can sound when I keep my drumming simple and to the point. Even when I check out some of the greats, and I hear something that floors me – sometimes it’s so simple! But is it?

From a technical standpoint, yes, the actual drumming was “simple.” But, at the same time – it was beautiful, just right, and musical. I have found that the more I trust myself with allowing simplicity to shine through, then the more I “get” the music being played. It seems simple enough – play for the music and let that dictate everything else. But I find that I have to let go of the things that I’ve been practicing – the licks – and just let it happen. Quite often (for me), that’s not as simple as it sounds. It has helped me if I think more as if I’m a listener and less as if I’m a drummer. I wish that that was simple!
