Happy Birthday to Elvin Jones!

I remember a moment upon hearing Elvin Jones on John Coltrane’s “Transition” when I was in college. My roommate had just put on the record (yes, the LP), and I started to listen, really listen. Well, I ended up missing the class that I was on my way to at the time. That entire recording struck me: powerful and honest. Everyone in the John Coltrane Quartet moved me: John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones! I continue to want to listen to music that is that honest. I hope to play music that conveys honesty as well. Seeing as how I enjoy many different types of music, I’m not concerned with the genre of the music being played.

At this point, my goal is to try to simply be honest when I play. That’s all I can ask of myself.
