Over the years and up to this day, I have been interested in learning the drums. What can the drum set do? What are the various styles that I may not be good at — yet? I purposefully buy drum books that cover techniques and ways of playing with which I am unfamiliar. Not only do I hope to gain some insight into some new territory, but this also helps me to keep a beginner’s mindset. Not all books cover entirely new ground, and that’s OK. All of my favorite books have a suggested discography in their particular style.

It has been my experience that the more I can try to take in, then the larger my vocabulary. Applying the right thing at the right time will be up to me. Having to look at new material on a fairly constant basis also helps me to relate to my students. I never want to forgot the struggle that can be involved. I want to keep that beginner’s mind at the forefront.
