I was recording today – tracking bass and drums. For some reason, I swapped out snare drums. I took the drum that’s usually to my left (by my hi-hat) and set it up as my main snare drum. I didn’t dig it, but the bass player did! So, I left it there and let my ears adjust to see if I could hear what he was hearing. After recording and then listening to one more take of the first part of the tune, I started to hear it and I loved it!
It can be so beneficial to have feedback from someone other than yourself. Once that feedback comes in, I find it useful to listen to those comments and suggestions without taking it personally. Sometimes, the comments are positive and they’re nice to hear. Other times, the suggestion may be something I don’t agree with, and that’s fine. I find that if I can at least try it – really try it – then I may surprise myself. That happened today and I’m thankful.
