Many drummers refer to themselves as a “groove drummer.” That’s fine. However, I recently heard Vinnie Colaiuta reply something along the lines of, “well, I hope so!” We all need to groove. I want to be dancing either on the floor or in my seat — all the time. Peter Erskine has talked about how the Jazz ride cymbal pattern needs to be dancing on top of the cymbal. Perfect. Play all the fast notes you want, but keep it groovin’.
When I’m playing, my goal is to communicate that feeling to everyone — the band, patrons of the bar, the staff… everyone.
