At this point in my drumming life, I know what I can do comfortably. I also know what I cannot do. I continue to try to push myself to learn new grooves, new stickings, and generally fresh ways of approaching the instrument. It’s an ongoing learning process — one which will never end. I also make sure to continue practicing what I already can do, including the basics. It never ceases to amaze me how far those ideas will carry me. I may start out with single strokes at a very slow tempo, change the arm motion/accents a bit, and then change the rate of speed without varying the initial pulse. I love that sort of stuff. It’s fun and also ends up sounding good around the kit. I will continue this process for as long as possible.
