I have posted before about the notion of playing the gig you’re on — not the one that you may be dreaming of. You can search for that post — it’s only slightly different than this one. The theme is the same, and bears repeating.
I always encourage my students to play the gig that they’re on at any given moment. When a bandleader hires me, I take the time to listen to the tunes, make charts if necessary, and get the feel for the music being played. I’ll bring all of my chops to the gig; however, the most important thing for me is to fit the music. I rather enjoy this idea. If it’s my own group, then I’ll play a certain way for Latin Jazz Fusion Bebop or whatever it’s being called. I don’t focus on the label, but rather the music. If the music calls for me to bring my second floor tom, two different cowbells, a bunch of cymbals and a jam block set on a foot pedal — then great! If not, then I’m really ok with that, as well. In my experience the main thing is that I respect the music being played, and have some fun at the same time. This can be done tastefully, and enjoyably. And musically — that’s always the goal.
