It’s a new year — 2018 — a time for new beginnings, taking stock of where I am, where I want to be, and setting drumming goals.
I’ve been having so much fun running jazz workshops at my studio that one goal of mine is to learn more jazz standards — on piano. My drum set approach can only be enhanced by learning the melody and harmony of jazz tunes. For many years now, I have been drawn to drummers who play for the music — regardless of genre. I can hear it in everything they do on the drums. Their musical voice speaks first as a musician — a musician who happens to play the drums. Even though this has been a long-term goal of mine, it has only been recently that I started practicing piano again. I’m completely digging it. There never seems to be enough time in any given day for most of us, but I have made the commitment to myself to do this. I couldn’t be happier — which is yet another goal of mine. I like how that works!
