I’ve been listening to some great players and their take on the Brazilian Bossa Nova. Besides the Brazilian drummers, the cats I really like best are the players that keep it swingin’ while playing “straight” 8th notes. Check out Jimmy Cobb with Wes Montgomery on Cariba from the album “Full House.” Also, listen to Ed Thigpen with the Oscar Peterson Trio on the album “We Get Requests.” Ed’s groove on Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars (Corcovado) is simply beautiful. I find that it’s really fun to go for this feel and see how it affects people — they can’t sit still!
