Previously I have posted some thoughts on drum technique. To summarize, I believe that every drummer can benefit from good technique. Have command over your instrument instead of the other way around. I’m from the school of thought that a solid foundation will transcend any one musical genre in particular. Any thoughtful, concentrated work done moving your hands and incorporating foot coordination will be time well spent.
Learn how to groove and, at the same time, how to fit into different musical styles. Some music requires me to play a “part” and not much else. Some parts (or beats, if you will) are harder than others, but once learned this is what I need to do. Some beats have required years of my time to get close. Latin and Jazz drumming are good examples of drumming that require quite a bit of interdependence (with a nod to John Riley here) just to get started!
Strive to get really good and play as much music as you can with many different musicians.
