As drummers, it’s our job to give our best to the band leader. Sometimes, it’s clear what someone wants and other times it’s not as clear. If you’re working for a band leader who is new to you, ask questions before the gig. Listen to recordings and try to capture the vibe of what they do. Transcribe songs and grooves as a way to not only learn, but to show your professionalism.
Once the tune is going, the drummer is the leader. It may not be your band, but you control the tempo, the feel and just about everything else. Use your eyes and ears and make adjustments as needed or asked for, but understand that you’re in the driver’s seat now!
