Many of my drum students have problems when leading with their non-dominant hand. This occurs when attempting drum fills as well as when starting rudiments with their left hand (e.g.) if they are right-handed. There are nice exercises that deal with this on the drums, however, I also believe in extending this into their everyday lives.
One thing I suggest is to start using your non-dominant hand for everything: brush your teeth; brush your hair (if you have any, lol); put your keys in door; open doors; put wing nuts on cymbal stands; pick up books; switch the hand holding the knife while eating, etc. In short, start doing everything with your “weaker” hand that your dominant hand usually does.
The brain seems to start receiving the message by doing everyday tasks. I see it work in my students.
