I think that this is a great question, and one that I was asked recently.
From my experience, two things come to mind: (1) not enough time is spent on basic hand technique; and (2) not enough time is spent listening to the masters. Some people have great chops, but then that’s all I hear when they play. I want the chops to fit the song and style of music – which means sometimes no flash/chops are needed. Just groove! Grooving can be considered a “chop” to develop, and more drummers (as well as all musicians) would be wise to understand that concept. However, when it’s appropriate to play something fast and/or “choppy,” some people can’t pull it off cleanly.
So, practice that technique and then learn when not to use it! Did I mention learn to groove?
