This past weekend I had the pleasure of working with four bands, three of whom were new to me. I had to learn quite a few songs in a fairly short period of time and keep it straight at each gig. For one of the bands, charts were emailed and I made notes on those. For the other two, I had to check out recordings and make my own notes/charts. I really had to be careful with my schedule during the week in order to leave myself enough time to chart things out and get the tunes in my head.
My mp3 player went everywhere with me in an effort to get away from needing the charts at each respective gig. I really wanted to sound good on each tune —as if I had been playing these tunes with these bands for years. That being said, I didn’t get as much time as I had hoped for, so my notes and charts were indispensable at the gigs. I received some nice comments about how tight the band(s) sounded and many people were surprised upon learning that I was not the regular guy. That was a nice feeling and it means my homework paid off. That was my goal.
