In order to play with ease on the snare drum, let alone the drum set, I find it very useful to use the four stick strokes. There has been much written about them, so I will not attempt to re-write this material. Suffice it to say, the four stick strokes help me play everything I do and to play with very little effort. When I couple the different strokes with an appropriate stick height, things get even easier. I am amazed at how quietly I can play and still maintain the groove and the energy. I did not learn about the four stick strokes at an early age, and yet they seemed very natural to learn when demonstrated. Today, I cannot imagine playing without them.
All my students learn about this – sooner rather than later. It seems to help everyone who tries them.
