I’ve been having fun recently coming up with ideas for drum parts for some tunes that a friend of mine has been writing. These are instrumental tunes that would probably be labeled as “jazz fusion.” We’re tracking bass and drums together (with a click) and then adding saxophone and keys after that. We’ve even added some percussion on one track.
I’m allowing my drums to really ring/sing quite a bit and I’m very happy with how they sound on the playback. To me, this is how I want my drums to sound. When I record in other situations, sometimes I’ve been asked to add tape/gel to keep the ringing down a bit. This is fine and I do it without any complaints. It’s their recording and I’m just a hired hand. I want to help them get what they want and help them with their vision.
I am finding that the more I let my voice and sound come through during these recordings, then the more fun I end up having. I’m trying to fit the style/sound and create some fun moments at the same time. I’m learning quite a bit about myself, and I like that aspect of the process – a lot!
