It has been my experience that consistency plays a important role when trying to improve. I am talking about consistency in terms of the amount of time spent practicing; the actual time of day that is chosen for practicing; and the practice routine utilized. Combining these variables in a consistent way will yield results. Time and time again, I have seen this work.

Pick a time of day to practice and try to stick to that same time every day. There will be exceptions, but there’s usually a way to make it happen.

Try to practice for a set amount of time at every practice session. I find that it’s best to get thirty minutes a day six to seven times a week as compared to doing a few really long sessions only twice a week. If you can get more than thirty minutes a day, then great. The key is to be consistent. Start with thirty minutes a day and then up that to forty-five or sixty minutes later, if possible. This will be easier than the other way around and far less frustrating. Consistency will coincide with being realistic.

Have a practice routine and stick with it. (Please see my prior post.) The routine is designed to be flexible, so it remains attainable and fun!

Once the consistency is established in your practicing, then that consistency will come through when you are playing at gigs, rehearsals, jam sessions, etc. You will find yourself having less “bad” nights on the bandstand. Even on an “off” night, you’ll sound good. Try it and let me know!
