As drummers, it can be far too easy to play without considering our breathing. Contrary to a saxophone or trumpet, e.g., the drum set does not require that we use our lungs to produce the sound. I have listened to many recordings and live performances of lots of musicians. I tend to be drawn to the musicians who are “singing” through their instruments.

While practicing, I try singing as I play. This can be done when others are soloing on the form of a jazz standard or really at any time. Try singing the tune as others are soloing. Now, try singing the tune as you solo. See if your ideas and phrases start sounding more musical. Don’t shy away from some space and dynamics. Talk or sing the entire time. Take time to breathe. It’s been a huge benefit for me — in many ways!
