Many adjectives and phrases can used to describe a musician’s and/or band’s performance. Quite a few of these seem to be very popular: they killed it; they were smokin’; or she was on fire! One problem for me is what to do with that information if I didn’t see that particular show. I don’t know how killin’ it was — what is it being compared to that I know? It seems to me, that there could be a standard this is met for these terms to make a bit of sense. Yet, that seems impossible. E.g., who will decide on this standard? Many questions arise if I start going down this path.

One thing that I do enjoy hearing is how the show affected someone on a personal level. No standard has to be in place for me to start to understand something like: Wow, I really had a great time and the band was just so much fun with lots of energy. I immediately get it. Any time I come away from a show, I try to talk about it on a personal level. My hope is that others will listen to my words and hear me, and not some terms that could be confusing or even somewhat meaningless.
