People contact me for gigs in various ways: email; text messages; Facebook Messenger and cell phone. Not only do I respond as quickly as possible, but I take my time reading emails and texts. The initial text may list a certain date and then the follow-up to that sometimes lists something different. When this happens, I make sure to immediately contact the contractor to clarify and confirm. I may have said yes to the date, but it’s possible that’s not the actual date.

I prefer email for these things. I keep all emails — at least until the gig is done. I can easily search them and refer back to the details when in doubt. If something changes along the way, I can make sure that I understand. When the gig time changes (and they do change), I can see if that is going to conflict with another gig and/or teaching. It’s all in the details. It pays to keep on top of these things.
