Getting lost in the music has at least two connotations. The first one is pretty great and the second one is not as nice.

There have been times when I have been so into the music, that I transcend that moment in time. It can seem as if the drums are playing me. That’s a cool thing and tends to happen to me when I completely let go. There are other times when “getting lost in the music” can refer to literally not knowing where I am in the chart/tune. That’s not quite as cool! At that point, I really need to use my ears even more than usual. The bassist and/or chordal instrument will be key to me to determine my place.

The one really great thing about getting lost and not knowing exactly where I am in the tune, is that the first meaning of “getting lost” can happen. If I can surrender to not knowing where I am and let the music play me, then all of sudden I am lost in a good way. It’s a bit weird, but I will embrace it while at the same time trying to find my way back — but only enough as necessary.
