If I had to name one skill that has come in handy time and time again through the years, it is the ability of being organized. Yes, I’ve spent lots of time practicing the drums, learning different styles and tunes. However, I believe that the organizational aspect of running a business as a freelance drummer and drum instructor is right up there with all of that.

When I get booked, I try to get as much information as possible: where; when; what style of music; song list; attire; load-in instructions; pay. Some bandleaders can provide all of this information immediately and others take a bit more time. I remain patient and let them know that I can be better prepared for their gig the sooner I have all of this information. I may not accept a gig right away if too many details are up in the air.

I want to be as professional as possible at all times, so I show up early to load-in. Show up early! Don’t party! Have the tunes ready, play for the music, and have a great time. I tend to get called again by doing all of this.
